Little Wing Farm is located in the scenic rolling hills of central Virginia,just ten miles south of Charlottesville, Virginia. The farm is home to twenty plus huacaya alpacas, representing Peruvian , Chilean and Bolivan bloodlines. My husband and I started as caretakers of one of the largest Huacaya alpaca farms on the East Coast. Our employers retired, dispersing their 200 alpacas in 2000, many breeding programs both large and small benefited from this legacy sale.
This alpaca care experience, however, was irreplacable and although heartbreaking, we were determined to find a way to pursue our alpaca lifestyle. Now with a smaller, more manageably sized alpaca herd, we hope to not only enjoy them but to strive to contribute positively, to a breed thousands of years old with the same fascination, yet aided by new research and modern technology. Trends in alpaca breeding may change but the quality of alpaca fiber and alpaca genetics advance regardless of fads, in a rapidly expanding alpaca industry.
